UCL club ‘in contact’ with Liverpool over signing £20m star Klopp loves; January exit from Anfield is looking likely

Celtic have reportedly been ‘in contact’ with Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, with the Ireland international keen on a move away from Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of the 24-year-old but is well aware of his desire to play consistent first-team football elsewhere.

Alisson Becker is, understandably, one of the first names on Liverpool’s team sheet week in week out, so barring an injury to him, it seems unlikely Kelleher will be breaking into the team any time soon.

Plenty of clubs, including Celtic, made enquiries about signing the shot-stopper this summer but were put off by the Reds’ £20m price tag.

Klopp said at the end of last season said it would take a big offer to consider selling him.

“I honestly can’t see Caoimh leaving,” Klopp said. “It must be an extraordinary offer for me to start thinking [of selling him], I have to say.”

Despite this, reports suggest that Celtic have a great chance of signing Kelleher when the transfer window re-opens in January. This comes as a boost for Brendan Rodgers, who is an admirer of the Irishman.

Celtic pushing to sign Kelleher

According to transfer journalist Dean Jones, Celtic have indeed been in contact with Liverpool over signing Kelleher and despite missing out this summer, still want the move to happen.

“It’s a weird one, Kelleher. You look at [Celtic first choice Joe] Hart, and he’s got so much experience, and then you’re going to change that by going for a goalkeeper who’s at the opposite end of things and trying to make a name for himself in his career,” Jones told GiveMeSport.

“So, you’re going from one extreme to another.

“But Kelleher, I feel like he’s one of the best backup goalkeepers in the Premier League right now, and there’s only a certain amount of time he will wait before getting his opportunity.

“So, we know there’s been contact here, and they want this to happen. Hart can’t go on forever, so it seems like he’d be a good replacement.”

With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Celtic make a concrete bid for Kelleher in January. The player is thought to be keen on the move, so personal terms are not expected to be a problem.

Whether or not they can agree a fee with Liverpool, however, remains to be seen.
