Tottenham transfers: Four-year deal agreed after Postecoglou hunt as rival manager gets his way

Tottenham Hotspur have been unsuccessful in convincing Kyogo Furuhashi to follow Ange Postecoglou to the Premier League, as the striker has agreed a new four-year contract with Celtic.

Postecoglou was announced as Tottenham’s new head coach on June 6, which means he will soon become the first Australian to manage a Premier League match. Tottenham swooped in for the 57-year-old after he won five out of a possible six trophies with Celtic.

Following Postecoglou’s arrival in North London, it came as no surprise that Tottenham were linked with some of his former Celtic players.

Japan centre-forward Furuhashi was soon named as a target after an exceptional 2022-23 campaign in which he bagged 34 goals in 50 games.

On June 25, Postecoglou’s managerial replacement at Celtic, Brendan Rodgers, attempted to shut down rumours that Furuhashi would leave for Spurs. He explained how the attacker is perfect for his system as he shares traits with Liverpool hero Luis Suarez and Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.

And Rodgers has now gotten his way as Furuhashi has ended speculation about a Spurs transfer by agreeing a fresh contract at Celtic Park.

A statement from the Scottish giants read: ‘Kyogo has signed a new four-year deal, taking him to at least 2027 with the club.’

It added: ‘The fact that the goal machine and fans’ favourite who played a significant part in delivering the silverware [last season] has tied his future to the club is a major coup.’

Tottenham must move on from Celtic star

It seems Spurs will have to identify other potential striker targets amid uncertainty surrounding Harry Kane’s future. As per the latest information from German journalist Florian Plettenberg, Kane ‘only wants to join Bayern’ next.

And after having an opening £60million bid rejected, Bayern are understood to be ‘planning a new offer’ for him. This will be worth £80m plus add-ons, which Bayern think will be enough for Spurs to let their talisman go.

Spurs have previously told Manchester United it would take a proposal of more than £100m to sign Kane, despite him entering the final 12 months of his contract. But this is because they are one of Spurs’ direct rivals, so it should not cost Bayern quite as much.

Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, Benfica star Goncalo Ramos and Lille ace Jonathan David may now be targeted by Spurs as Kane replacements, with Furuhashi no longer an option.

Meanwhile, a Serie A star has finally been put up for sale after two years of links with Spurs.
