Newcastle transfer exclusive: Howe plotting massive coup for classy French siblings in PIF statement
Newcastle are plotting a major transfer coup this summer by landing two French international brothers who could make a big impact for Eddie Howe’s men, TEAMtalk understands.
The Toon chief is expected to be backed again in the summer transfer window, especially if Newcastle can land one of the coveted top-four spots this season and secure Champions League football.
A creative attacking midfielder is Howe’s priority but we understand that Newcastle have their eyes on not just one but both Thuram brothers.
The club have watched Khephren Thuram, who plays in France for Nice, in recent weeks and have a long-standing interest in Borussia Monchengladbach attacker Marcus Thuram.
Going into this summer we understand Newcastle are after up to six new players. Indeed, this is going to be the first window we really see PIF and their money on show.
A new left-back, centre-half, attacking midfielder, striker, wide-forward and holding midfielder are all on their radar.
The Thuram brothers tick the latter two boxes. Kephren is someone they have looked at for the deep-lying midfield role but is not top of their agenda.
But the interest in his brother Marcus is more advanced.
Out-of-contract in the summer, he is now eligible to talk to clubs and Newcastle have taken advantage of that and spoken to him.
However, Inter Milan believe they are favourites to land him at this stage, as their talks have also gone well.
Top four key to Newcastle signing hopes
Attracting top players to St James’ Park will depend, however, on if Newcastle are in Europe next season.
Howe’s men are currently two points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with two games in hand so are still firmly in the mix for the Champions League.
However, if they fail to usurp either Spurs or Manchester United in that top-four race then ending up in the Europa League or worst still the Europa Conference League could weaken their hand in terms of the targets they want to attract.
Newcastle are back in action on Sunday April 2 when they welcome Erik ten Hag’s United to St James in a huge game.
