The eight Manchester United players who are out of contract at the end of the 2023-24 season

Manchester United have seen a few big-name players leave recently – and there could be more to come next summer.

The likes of Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho have all signed new long-term contracts this year, but some players face an uncertain future at the club.

We’ve taken a look at eight United players who currently have less than a year left on their current contract.

Note: we’ve not included Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon, who both joined United on season-long loan deals in the summer.

Tom Heaton

Since returning to United on a free transfer in 2021, Heaton has made just three first-team appearances in all competitions.

He currently appears to be third choice in the goalkeeping pecking order, behind new signings Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.

The 37-year-old was linked with Luton Town in the summer, but Erik ten Hag reportedly blocked his move to Kenilworth Road.

“I love it here,” Heaton said during United’s pre-season tour. “I have been part of this football club for a long time, but I can’t lie, I also love playing.”

Heaton will be out of contract at the end of the season and could join another club in search of regular first-team football.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Wan-Bissaka was a peripheral figure during the opening months of the 2022/23 season, and United were reportedly willing to offload him during the January transfer window.

But he became a key player during the second half of the campaign as United won the EFL Cup and qualified for the Champions League.

The 25-year-old, who joined United from Crystal Palace in 2019, has now usurped Diogo Dalot and established himself as Ten Hag’s first-choice right-back.

According to The Telegraph, United have opened talks over a long-term new deal for Wan-Bissaka, which will include an increase on his £100,000-per-week wages.

His current deal expires at the end of the current season, though there is an option to extend that by another year.

Jonny Evans

After leaving Leicester City at the end of last season, Evans joined United’s pre-season tour of the United States to maintain his fitness.

The centre-back, who came through United’s academy, managed to impress Ten Hag in training and was handed a one-year contract on transfer deadline day.

He will provide the manager with defensive cover for Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane.

“Jonny is a winner who has experienced everything in the game,” United Football Director John Murtough said. “These characteristics are invaluable to the culture that we’re building here.

“His attitude and work ethic are second to none and Erik and the coaching staff know he’s someone they can rely on whenever needed this season.”

The 35-year-old made his second United debut in their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal and will be hoping to earn a contract extension in the coming months.

Victor Lindelof

Lindelof had a bit-part role for the majority of the 2022/23 campaign as Varane and Martinez formed an impressive centre-back partnership.

But the 29-year-old, who joined United from Benfica in 2017, was brought back into the side towards the end of the season and produced a string of impressive performances.

Despite being linked with Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Roma and Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer, he remained at Old Trafford.

“I love Manchester United and I still have a contract. So I can say that my exit this summer wasn’t close at all,” Lindelof recently told reporters.

While that contract is set to expire at the end of the 2023/24 season, Ten Hag’s side do have an option to extend his deal by another 12 months.

According to Football Insider, United are also in talks with the Sweden international about a new long-term contract.

Alvaro Fernandez

Fernandez joined United from Real Madrid’s academy in September 2020 and is held in high regard at Old Trafford.

The left-back spent last season on loan at Preston North End, making 42 appearances in all competitions and winning their Young Player of the Year award.

While some figures felt he could have deputised for the injured Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, United reportedly felt he needed another loan move before he could be considered for a first-team role.

The 20-year-old is now at La Liga side Granada, but there is no option to make the move permanent at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

United will monitor Fernandez’s progress in Spain and could trigger a 12-month extension in his contract in order to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer.

Brandon Williams

Williams came through the academy at United but has played just competitive minutes under Ten Hag, coming off the bench in an EFL Cup win over Burnley last season.

The 23-year-old currently finds himself behind Shaw, Malacia, Sergio Reguilon and Fernandez in the left-back pecking order.

He has less than a year left on his contract but is spending the 2023/24 season on loan at Championship side Ipswich Town, who are managed by former United coach Kieran McKenna.

“I played a lot of games when I broke through at United and have had a couple of tough seasons, too, so it’s good for me to get back out and start playing again,” he told TownTV.

While United can extend Williams’ contract, it remains to be seen whether that one-year option is activated over the next 12 months.

Hannibal Mejbri 

Despite only making three first-team appearances for United, Mejbri is regarded as one of the club’s brightest prospects.

The 20-year-old midfielder spent last season on loan at Birmingham City, where he made 41 appearances and won the club’s Goal of the Season award.

He then attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla, Monaco, Rennes, Feyenoord, Anderlecht, Besiktas and several clubs in England during the summer window.

But Ten Hag refused to let him go as he reportedly sees the Tunisia international as a player who can make an impact in the first team this season.

Tunisian journalist Mahmoud Missaoui claims that United are in talks with Mejbri over a new contract as his current deal expires in 2024, although they have the option to extend it for a further season.

Anthony Martial

Martial arrived at United in a £36million deal in 2015 and was regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in European football.

But his progress has been hindered by a series of injury problems, and he has scored just 17 goals for United since the start of the 2020/21 season.

The striker emerged as a target for the Saudi Pro League in the summer, but TEAMtalk understands that he doesn’t want to move to the Middle East,

According to the Manchester Evening News, United may release Martial at the end of the season if his stagnation continues and they are yet to decide if they will trigger the one-year extension in his contract.

The France international currently earns £250,000-a-week and United can save themselves £13million in wages if they let him go.
