Founded in 1863 and initially called Stoke Ramblers, the club changed its name to Stoke City in 1925. Known as The Potters, the club traditionally play in red and white striped shirts and white shorts. Despite its long history, the club has not won much silverware. They won the League Cup in 1971/72 and were runners-up in the same competition in the 1963/64 season. They were also FA Cup runners-up in 2010/11. Their highest league finish is a creditable fourth place, achieved twice, once in the 1935/36 season and then again in the season of 1946/47.
The club is currently managed by Michael O'Neill but for most football fans in recent times the name strongly associated with the club is that of Tony Pulis, who had two spells at the club and who led the club to the Premier League. Other managers who have led the team include Lou Macari, Mick Mills and Tony Waddington.
Over the years a number of great players have graced the fields at The Bet365 Arena (or The Britannia Stadium as it was formerly known) and at Victoria Park. Some of the big names include Mark Stein, Jimmy Greenhoff, Ryan Shawcross, Alan Hudson and England defender Neil Franklin. Goalkeeping great Gordon Banks and football legend Sir Stanley Matthews round out the list of exceptional players who have appeared for The Potters.
Who owns Stoke City?
The club is owned by the British gaming group Bet365 that was founded by Denise Coates. Her brother John is the club's joint chairman along with his father, Peter.
