Sky Sports man reveals Leeds Utd failure with £10m bid as Celtic prepare definitive next step within days

Leeds United tried to sign Matt O’Riley from Celtic this summer, a Sky Sports News reporter has revealed, but the midfielder is now in line to receive a new contract.

According to Anthony Joseph, O’Riley was the subject of a £10m bid by Leeds while the transfer window was still open. However, it was not enough to tempt Celtic into a sale. Indeed, they rejected the offer that Leeds had put on the table, even though they would have made a profit of £8.5m by accepting.

Now, Sky reporter Joseph has provided the update that Celtic want to tie O’Riley down to a new contract. By doing so, they will increase his wages, as well as the length of time he is committed to them for.

Celtic seemingly expect swift progress, since Joseph has predicted that they hope to finalise the new O’Riley deal during the current international break.

O’Riley is a Denmark under-21 international, but is not currently on duty with them. Therefore, Celtic have a window of opportunity to tie him down for the long term.

His current contract is due to expire in 2026, by which point he would be 25 years old. Thus, by extending his contract further, Celtic would be aiming to keep hold of him into his prime years.

TEAMtalk revealed back in June that O’Riley was also under consideration by Leicester City as a possible replacement for Tottenham-bound James Maddison.

Had he joined either Leicester or Leeds, O’Riley would have had the chance to add to his solitary Championship appearance from back when he was with Fulham.

Celtic bought him after his 18-month stint in League One with MK Dons. Since then, he has scored 10 goals in 77 games for the club.

Brendan Rodgers has given him starts in all five of Celtic’s matches so far this season between the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish League Cup.
