Liverpool in dreamland as Fabrizio Romano confirms £60m midfielder deal is ‘done’ in race against time

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Liverpool deal for Dominik Szoboszlai is ‘done’ as the Reds have triggered his release clause.

For much of last season, the midfield was what was dragging the Reds down. Indeed, performances from players who had previously been star players were not what were expected.

The ages of some of the midfielders tell a story in themselves. Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Thiago Alcantara are all north of 30, and Fabinho isn’t far off.

Those factors didn’t help Liverpool performances, and while the season didn’t end as badly as it appeared it might at one point, they still finished just fifth – a poor campaign by their lofty standards.

That some midfielders – Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Milner – will leave this summer, alongside the aforementioned problems, meant midfield signings were a must.

A big one has already been confirmed in Alexis Mac Allister, who joined from Brighton for just £35million.

Not content with just the one signing, though, the Reds have maintained their push for more midfield reinforcements.

The main man at this point is attack-minded Leipzig midfielder Szoboszlai. Today (June 30) it was reported the Reds would ‘ramp up’ their move for the Hungarian.

Time is of the essence, as Szoboszlai has a release clause of approximately £60million, which is active until the end of the day.

As such, the Reds have clearly been working hard on getting the deal done, and it seems they’ve been able to do so.

Indeed, transfer insider Romano has given the deal the famous ‘here we go’ stamp, stating the deal is ‘done’ and will be signed ‘soon’.

He states, as well as the release clause being triggered, that personal terms are ‘agreed’ and that Szoboszlai will undergo his medical soon.

Savvy Liverpool strike sensational deal

Liverpool will be ecstatic that they’ve been able to get this deal across the line for a few reasons, not least that there were other sides interested in the midfielder.

Szoboszlai brings a different element to the midfield – he’s clearly got a very good eye for goal, having netted 10 times and provided 13 assists in all competitions last season.

The Reds’ midfield looks a much better one than it did last season following the signings of both him and Mac Allister.

The savvy nature of the deals is something to behold, too.

When this deal goes through, they’ll have spent a combined £95million on Szoboszlai and Mac Allister. Given the likes of Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo could command north of that individually, Liverpool’s work seems very smart.

It will seem even more so if the pair are able to impact them to the point of winning trophies, which will be the hope.
