Man Utd ‘competition’ offers ace last life as Fabrizio Romano confirms ‘very good chance’ of stay

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Aaron Wan-Bissaka now has a “very good chance” of remaining at Manchester United to provide “competition” at right-back.

Wan-Bissaka’s United career started on the right foot, as he was the starting right-back for his first two seasons. During those two seasons, the Red Devils finished the Premier League in third place, and then second.

In his third season, his game-time dropped, and he played just 20 league games. At the start of this term, after Erik ten Hag took charge at Old Trafford, his first choice at right-back was clear – Diogo Dalot.

The Portuguese started the first 13 league games, and United won seven of those and drew two. As such, the decision appeared to have paid dividends.

With Dalot performing at a high level, it seemed that Wan-Bissaka would have no route back into the side.  As such, United decided he would be able to move on, and they would find a replacement for him.

However, with an injury to Dalot after the World Cup hindering his playing time, the former Crystal Palace man has found himself back in the side.

Of the five games Wan-Bissaka has played in the Premier League during that period, United have won four and drawn one.

His efforts were underlined by what might have been a game-saving challenge against his former side in January.

Man Utd U-turn on Wan-Bissaka

That he has been performing in Dalot’s absence may have saved his United career. Indeed, transfer insider Romano has reported that United are leaning towards keeping him at the club.

“Aaron Wan-Bissaka now has [a] very good chance to stay at Manchester United,” he said on his YouTube channel.

“You remember in November, December he was available on the market after a very difficult first part of the season.

“Now, the feeling is the opposite, [it] is for Wan-Bissaka to stay at Man United.”

That the defender has now shown that he can provide competition for Dalot seems to have given him another life at Old Trafford.

“Man United are focussing on Wan-Bissaka to create competition for Dalot, who is of course the owner of the right-back at Manchester United,” Romano added.

Replacement signing attempts bore no fruit

Romano has also revealed United’s attempts to sign a replacement right-back.

“They were considering some options around Europe, including Juranovic from Celtic. He was never close to Chelsea, but he was one of the players appreciated by Man United,” he said.

Clearly, nothing came of their interest in him. That they were tracking the Celtic right-back shows United’s current financial situation. Surely they would have wanted somebody of higher quality, but that may have been out of their price range.

As such, keeping Wan-Bissaka at the club makes sense. Not only is he performing well, but United will not need to shell cash on a replacement if he is to remain.
