Paul Scholes tears into Michael Carrick with damning claims on Man Utd sack

Paul Scholes has torn a strip out of his former Manchester United teammate Michael Carrick by claiming he should be “embarrassed” to still be at Old Trafford.

Carrick has been chosen as the man to lead the team in the short term as the Red Devils navigate through choppy waters. That’s after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was removed from his position on Sunday after a run of seven defeats in 13 games in all competitions. Heavy defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City ramped up the pressure on the Norwegian and the 4-1 reverse at Watford was his final act.

Solskjaer, who reportedly refused to replace any of his coaching staff in the run up to his sacking, left alone. All his coaching staff remain in situ, including technical director Darren Fletcher and first-team coach Carrick.

His spell in charge may only prove brief. Indeed, Manchester United are understood to be in talks with PSG over compensation for Mauricio Pochettino.

And his interview on Tuesday evening did little do dampen rumours of a move to Old Trafford.

However, speaking ahead of Tuesday’s vital Champions League clash in Villarreal, Scholes had some strong words for Carrick.

He claims he should feel embarrassed to have avoided the sack along with Solskjaer.

Speaking before kick-off on BT Sport, Scholes claims all the staff “should have gone” with Solskjaer.

“It’s the same people running the team,” Scholes said, as cited by the Evening Standard. “It’s the same people given massive responsibility every week to put that team on the pitch.

Scholes less than impressed

“Arguably it’s more Kieran McKenna and Michael Carrick who’ve been preparing the team. Ole gave them that responsibility, so how that changes now I don’t know.

“Four weeks ago, that Liverpool game. That was the time we knew Ole was going to go, it was plainly obvious. So then the people above had to prepare the next manager and the next batch of staff.

“I’d be almost embarrassed being the staff now, after what happened to Ole. I think they all should have gone. They were part of Ole’s team. Ole trusted them each week to prepare the team – and they’ve let the club and players down as much as Ole has.”

Rio Ferdinand added: “It would be a hard couple of days.

“There’s a focus from that squad of, ‘What’s your next move? What are your first few words – that will determine whether we are going to follow you or see you as one of the people who didn’t work before’. It’s a huge moment.”

Mark Hughes, meanwhile, admits he would be “very interested” in replacing Solskjaer.

“I haven’t had a call yet so I wouldn’t be too excited about it at the moment. I don’t think it’s going to happen, but you never know,” Hughes said.

“It’s a great position, one that a lot of managers would be very interested in, myself included.”
