Patrick Vieira sack latest: Crystal Palace owner ‘deeply unimpressed’ and starts ‘sounding out’ two potential replacements

Claims that Patrick Vieira could get the sack by Crystal Palace are growing in frequency – with one report suggesting his former club Arsenal could put the final nail in the coffin.

Crystal Palace are seriously out of form at present. They remain without a win in 2023, meaning they are on a 12-game winless run. They have failed to score in any of their four most recent matches.

Consequently, they find themselves just three points above the relegation zone. And the mood within the club is quickly becoming more negative, especially after their most recent defeat to rivals Brighton.

In the wake of Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat, former Palace forward Clinton Morrison claimed that Vieira is definitely “under pressure” as the club’s manager.

Now, Morrison’s inkling has been backed up by separate reports from the Guardian and the Daily Mail – both of which confirm Vieira could be in immediate trouble.

According to the Guardian, Palace owner Steve Parish is “deeply unimpressed” by their recent form. Therefore, he is “seriously considering” giving Vieira the sack.

There is a suggestion that Vieira might only have one game left on the Palace bench. On Sunday, he is due to take his team to Arsenal, for whom he was once a standout player.

Should Palace fail to show enough signs of change against the Premier League leaders, the axe could fall on Vieira.

The Daily Mail also indicates that Palace could sack Vieira if they fail to turn things around against Arsenal. After all, an international break will follow, giving any new coach a window of opportunity to get a new message across, before what looks to be a kinder run of fixtures.

A third update from the Daily Telegraph relays that Palace will make a decision during talks early next week.

Confusion over potential Patrick Vieira replacements

Per the Mail, Vieira may get some relief simply because there is no “obvious candidate” to replace him yet.

However, the Guardian has revealed that Parish is already “sounding out” potential successors to Vieira. As things stand, two options from the Championship are standing out.

Palace could go for either Burnley’s Vincent Kompany or Middlesbrough’s Michael Carrick. That said, it might be difficult to prise them away from their respective clubs while they are each competing for promotion to the Premier League.

Hence, there are a lot of factors for Palace to weigh up as a critical stage of the season approaches. There would be a degree of irony if it all came crashing down for Vieira against the club where he earned such a strong reputation as a player.

And with the form Arsenal have been in, such an outcome cannot be ruled out. Quite quickly, Palace might have to start thinking about which direction to turn next.

Vieira has been in charge of the club since July 2021, when he was appointed after a lengthy search for a successor to Roy Hodgson. Palace finished 12th under his management last season.

Although they are in the same position now, there is significant danger of them being overtaken by some of the sides below them in the table. Therefore, Palace will be wondering if Vieira has earned their faith or not.

Despite having a contract until the end of next season, time is no longer on his side.
