Middlesbrough manager latest: Former Man Utd star offered top job and Boro confident he will accept

Middlesbrough have offered the manager’s job to a former Manchester United caretaker boss and are confident he will take it, TEAMtalk understands.

We’ve been informed that former Red Devils and England midfielder Michael Carrick is set to take charge and be in the dugout for the Championship clash with Huddersfield this weekend.

The 41-year-old spent 12 years as a player at Old Trafford before joining the coaching staff. He served first under Jose Mourinho and then Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He also had a three-game spell as temporary boss after the sacking of Solskjaer in November 2021. The former Tottenham star guided United to two wins and a draw in those three outings.

However, he left the club when German Ralf Rangnick was appointed interim coach until the end of last season.

Carrick has been one of several names in talks with Boro after they axed Chris Wilder in early October.

We revealed that former Riverside midfielder Lee Cattermole was one of the names in the frame. The early shortlist also included Carlos Corberan and Rob Edwards, with all three said to have interviewed.

Following Wilder’s sacking, reports emerged behind the scenes of broken financial promises and the amount of money at his disposal.

Wilder, meanwhile, was often linked with a string of alternative jobs. Burnley were among those linked with him over the summer. Meanwhile, just a week prior to his dismissal, Wilder’s name was connected to the Bournemouth vacancy.

However, it now looks like Boro‘s managerial situation is very close to being resolved, with Carrick on the brink of being announced.
