Incredible Man Utd ‘approach’ for Real Madrid legend revealed, with Ten Hag plotting Casemiro and Varane link up

Manchester United launched a sensational swoop for Real Madrid hero Sergio Ramos before the defender opted to go elsewhere, according to a report.

Ramos spent 16 years with Madrid, making 671 appearances and scoring 101 goals, despite his position. He wrote himself into the club’s folklore by helping them win a plethora of trophies, including four Champions Leagues, five La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys and four FIFA Club World Cups, among other silverware.

The centre-back became a free agent in summer 2021 though after failing to reach an agreement with Madrid over a new contract. He went on to spend two years in the French capital with Paris Saint-Germain, though his time there was not as successful as he would have hoped.

Ramos became a free agent for the second time earlier this year, and he unsurprisingly received several contract offers. He reportedly received a lucrative bid from Saudi Arabian outfit Al Ittihad, which would have seen him reunite with former Los Blancos team-mate Karim Benzema. Ramos was also contacted by Turkish club Galatasaray.

Incredibly, Man Utd can now be added to that list of interested clubs. As per The Sun, the Red Devils made an ‘approach’ to try and bring the Spaniard to the Premier League.

Following news of Raphael Varane’s injury, which has ruled him out for several weeks, Man Utd looked to Ramos as a top-class solution. They ‘made a late play’ to capture him before the summer transfer window shut on Friday.

Erik ten Hag’s side offered Ramos a one-year contract worth £73,000 a week. However, Man Utd were ‘slow’ in telling Ramos’ camp the details of the offer, and he resultantly rejected their advances.

Instead, Ramos has decided to re-join Spanish side Sevilla in a fairytale end to his career. Ramos came through the Sevilla academy and played 49 times for the club before signing for Madrid in 2005.

Man Utd fail to convince Real Madrid icon on move

It seems Ten Hag was eager to reunite Ramos with his former Madrid team-mates Casemiro and Varane at Old Trafford.

Ramos could have been a top signing for Man Utd. While he is now 37 years old, he would have brought more leadership – as well as a winning attitude – to the Man Utd backline, which has been heavily criticised in recent years.

Plus, with wages worth £73k a week, Man Utd would not have broken their wage structure when landing the World Cup Winner.

Ultimately, though, it makes sense that Ramos has decided to join Sevilla. He is more likely to start every game for them, while he will also be welcomed back as a hero. In addition, he is sure to receive a rapturous welcome when Sevilla come up against Madrid this season.

Meanwhile, a Europa Conference League club have announced the signing of a Man Utd player, with Fabrizio Romano also providing details of his new contract.
