One suitor left for Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso as European club pulls out of talks

Just one club remains in the hunt for Tottenham player Giovani Lo Celso after Fiorentina opted not to continue their talks for the 26-year-old.

Lo Celso found out Antonio Conte didn’t want him at Tottenham in July. The Italian manager left Lo Celso, Sergio Reguilon, Harry Winks and Tanguy Ndombele out of his pre-season squad for the tour of South Korea.

All four players are now gearing up to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spanish teams Sevilla and Barcelona are hoping to land Reguilon this summer.

Winks is thought to be a target for fellow Premier League outfit Everton. Despite this, Spurs are planning to offer him to Roma as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Nicolo Zaniolo.

Ndombele, meanwhile, is the centre of a transfer race between Newcastle and Villarreal. Spurs will have to take a big loss on the playmaker after paying a whopping £63million for him in 2019.

Like his team-mates, Lo Celso is picking up interest from clubs on the continent. Fiorentina have set their sights on the Argentine in recent days.

But according to their sporting director Daniele Prade, they are now locking onto other targets.

The chief said (via Fabrizio Romano): “We are no longer going for Gio Lo Celso, there’s nothing done with Tottenham.”

Giovano Lo Celso remains a top target for Spanish side

Due to this transfer stance, Villarreal are the only side who remain interested in taking Lo Celso off Spurs’ hands.

According to Romano, the player is a ‘top priority’ for Villarreal boss Unai Emery. The manager is clearly pushing officials at El Madrigal to complete the move.

And talks between Spurs and Villarreal are now ‘well advanced’, which means an agreement could soon occur.

Romano has previously revealed the parameters of the transfer. He states Lo Celso will join the La Liga club on a season-long loan with the option to buy.

This purchase option will become mandatory if certain conditions are met throughout the 2022-23 campaign. This could happen if Lo Celso makes over 20 appearances, for example.

It makes sense for Lo Celso and Spurs to part ways. Conte is taking big strides to improve the squad and Lo Celso is no longer good enough to get a starting spot.

Conte now has strong options in midfield. They include Yves Bissouma, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur and Oliver Skipp. Teenager Pape Matar Sarr is also coming through the ranks.

While Lo Celso has obvious talent, he stands little chance of getting into the team ahead of all those players. He now needs to join Villarreal and get his confidence back up.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the 39-cap international did well under Emery. The manager clearly wants him and will therefore give him plenty of game time this season.

If Giovani Lo Celso can get back to top form, then he will repay Emery with plenty of goals and assists.
