German source confirms Man Utd plan for Bundesliga signing that’ll oust unlucky star who saved Ten Hag

A reliable German source has provided a bittersweet update on a Man Utd move for an explosive option whose arrival would likely oust a player Erik ten Hag has been heavily reliant on in 2023.

Man Utd’s fixture list has been ultra-congested since the turn of the year. Hunting trophies on four fronts will do that to a club, though it’s a small price to pay when silverware is lifted at the end of the journey.

One player who’s featured heavily in 2023 is right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The 25-year-old has racked up 13 starts across all competitions in two months. That includes both Europa League ties against Barcelona and the EFL Cup fourth round and both semi-final legs.

Wan-Bissaka also played 56 minutes in the quarter final victory over Charlton Athletic after replacing the injured Diogo Dalot. He again came off the bench for Dalot in the final on Sunday, this time at the half-way stage.

Dalot’s injury issues in 2023 have undoubtedly opened the door for Wan-Bissaka and by all accounts, he’s strode right through.

Without Wan-Bissaka on the books and operating at a high level at right-back, Man Utd’s quest for an unlikely quadruple may have already fallen through.

However, there’s always been speculation Ten Hag wants a more attack-minded option in the position. As such, links to Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries and Jeremie Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen have never gone away.

Sky Germany recently reported a Man Utd move for Frimpong is becoming ‘more and more apparent’ as we approach the summer window. Frimpong is valued between £40m-£50m, though a deal can reportedly be done for around £30m-£35m.

The Netherlands international would unquestionably represent an attacking upgrade on Wan-Bissaka. Operating from either a right-back or right wing-back role, Frimpong has plundered 22 goal contributions from 64 appearances over the last 18 months at Leverkusen.

Now, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has provided a double-edged update on Frimpong to Man Utd.

Frimpong to oust Wan-Bissaka at Man Utd?

Firstly, he confirmed Frimpong is ‘still on the list’ of potential right-back signings at Man Utd.

However, Plettenberg noted that contrary to other reports that have claimed initial dialogue with Leverkusen has opened, there are ‘no concrete talks’ at this stage.

Regardless, in positive news for Ten Hag and co. Frimpong is deemed ‘keen to make the next step’ up in class.

A move to United who ended their six-year trophy drought on Sunday would fit that billing. The Red Devils are also on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League barring a late-season slip.

In the event Man Utd do move for Frimpong, it stands to reason Wan-Bissaka would be the fall guy.

Dalot has been Ten Hag’s preferred option when both players have been fit. Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein both recently confirmed talks over a new long-term contract for the Portuguese will take place shortly.

The Telegraph’s James Ducker reported United must ‘sell well’ if they’re to make the type of signings they crave in the summer.

Wan-Bissaka’s fine displays in 2023 have put him in the shop window and also reinforced his transfer value in the market.
