Liverpool are ready to put Dominik Szoboszlai through a medical in the next few days as they put the finishing touches to his £60m transfer – with wages taking the total package through the £100m barrier for the Merseysiders.

The Merseysiders have made the addition of new midfielders their top priority this summer after a disappointing 2022/23 campaign. Finishing fifth represented their worst full season under Klopp’s control and means they will play in the Europa League again next season.

Nonetheless, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita moving on, Liverpool have very quickly moved to bring in high-calibre replacements.

Within days of the season finishing, Liverpool managed to strike a deal to bring in Alexis Mac Allister. The Merseysiders will pay Brighton an initial £35m for the World Cup winner.

He scored 11 times during a superb campaign for the Seagulls, and he will now hope to bring that goal threat to Anfield. And joining him on Merseyside will be Hungarian playmaker Szoboszlai, with Liverpool on the cusp of his signature.

To that end, it was revealed on Friday evening that Liverpool had agreed to meet the £60m clause in Szoboszlai’s RB Leipzig contract.

And with Liverpool also committing to a deal worth £150,000 a week for the 22-year-old over five years, that deal will be worth a mimimum £39m to the player. Bonuses, related to Liverpool’s success, in his pay, means the total package for the Hungarian will set Liverpool back well over £100m.

Szoboszlai will now travel to the UK to undergo a medical with Liverpool. And if all goes as planned, his signing should be confirmed in days.

Liverpool plan to make Romeo Lavia their third summer signing

Szoboszlai made 44 appearances for Leipzig this season, scoring 10 goals and supplying 14 assists. That creativity helped Leipzig win the DfB-Pokal, as well as claiming a third-place finish.

Indeed, the star has a massive 62 goals and 67 assists across 216 career appearances so far. As such, it is clear to see what the attacking midfielder will bring.

Operating as a No 10, and with Mac Allister as a No 8, Liverpool now just need a No 6 – a defensive midfielder – to complete their rebuild.

To that end, Klopp has been strongly linked with a move for both Kouadio Kone and Khephren Thuram. However, Kone has picked up a knee injury at the European U21 Championships, making a move for him now unlikely.

As for Thuram, an approach for him also appears to have cooled amid claims Nice have decided not to sell him this summer.

As a result, Liverpool are reportedly set to turn their focus back towards Southampton’s Romeo Lavia.

The teenage star is set to leave St Mary’s after just one season and following their relegation to the Championship.

Lavia has been attracting attention from Arsenal, with the Gunners in talks over a reported £40m deal.

Klopp keen to add teenage star to his midfield

But Liverpool are now ready to step up their interest in landing the 19-year-old.

Speaking to Redmen TV, transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri claims the Reds are likely to target Lavia next.

“What I can say is Liverpool are going ahead with the profile. They are still interested, and they have kept contact with the entourage of the player.

“They announced their intention to make an offer this summer. This is something quite concrete and huge.

“As I said in my tweet [on Lavia] there are contacts with Southampton that can really help on the deal.”

Should Liverpool strike a deal for the Southampton player of the year, it will take their midfield transfer spree to £135m. That is some statement of intent from owners FSG.
