Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers reportedly wants to sign Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, as he looks to bring in a long-term replacement for Joe Hart.

Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of the Ireland international but is aware that he is keen to move elsewhere to play consistent first-team football.

Kelleher is, understandably, behind Alisson Becker in the pecking order, and made just four appearances in all competitions for Liverpool.

Klopp said at the end of last season said it would take a big offer to consider selling him, though.

“I honestly can’t see Caoimh leaving,” Klopp said. “It must be an extraordinary offer for me to start thinking [of selling him], I have to say.”

Kelleher has gradually risen through the Liverpool youth set-up and is now a well-respected goalkeepr in the Premier League.

As reported by TEAMtalk, Wolves considered a move for the goalkeeper in July. At the time, it was claimed that Liverpool value Kelleher at approximately £20m.

It now seems, however, that Wolves weren’t the only club who tried to sign Kelleher this summer.

Brendan Rodgers wants Kelleher at Celtic

According to the Sun, Celtic failed with a late attempt to sign Kelleher before the transfer window closed on Friday.

The report states, however, that it is ‘likely’ that the shot-stopper will leave sooner rather than later. Kelleher allegedly tried to leave this summer but Klopp was not willing to sanction his exit.

The manager was reportedly fearful that Alisson could join a Saudi club, too, which also prevented the Irishman’s exit.

The Sun adds that Liverpool ‘would also need to find a homegrown replacement for Kelleher,’ so that makes it even harder to allow him to leave.

Nevertheless, Kelleher is said to be keen on the chance of being Celtic’s number one for the next few years after spending so long on the sidelines at Anfield.

With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Celtic make another attempt to sign the Red’s keeper in January.
