Game over for Arsenal as top target completes ‘perfect’ move elsewhere

RB Leipzig have officially announced the signing of Arsenal target Dominik Szoboszlai from sister club RB Salzburg.

Szoboszlai had emerged as a major target for Arsenal in recent months as they look for more creativity. The Hungary international has been impressing in the Austrian top flight, with plenty of goals and assists already this season.

A number of clubs were interested in giving him the next step, but the one to avoid disappointment is Leipzig, who will be taking him to the German Bundesliga.

Leipzig have the same owners as Salzburg, so several players have moved between the clubs in recent years. Szoboszlai will be the next to follow that path.

It had been reported earlier on Thursday that Szoboszlai would be flying to Leipzig for his medical. Now, everything has been completed.

Leipzig have confirmed the signing of the 20-year-old on a contract until 2025. The transfer is reportedly worth €20m plus bonuses.

He will officially join them in January, and could make his debut against Borussia Dortmund on the 9th of that month.

Szoboszlai has revealed his enthusiasm about the move to Germany, where he hopes to improve his game further.

“I am very happy that the move to RB Leipzig worked out,” he told the club website. “The club has made great progress, is one of the best teams in the Bundesliga and is also causing a sensation in the Champions League.

“The move to Leipzig is perfect for my development, because I come to a top coach and an incredibly ambitious team that is very young, but has already gained a lot of experience and was able to celebrate some successes.

“I will be able to develop myself further here and of course I would like to help ensure that the club remains so successful in 2021.”

Arsenal need creativity

While their pursuit of Szoboszlai is now over, Arsenal still need someone to provide more creativity.

They have not scored more than one goal in a single Premier League game since their first match of October. And the club are well aware that needs to change.

Technical director Edu recently admitted: “It’s quite clear what we need.

“We need a player with creativity in the middle, we don’t have that in the squad right now.”

That new face will not be Szoboszlai, so Arsenal will have to look elsewhere.
