Arsenal announce completed deal for star Arteta deems ‘exceptional’ after witnessing huge progress

Mikel Arteta of Arsenal

Arsenal have confirmed that starting goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has signed a new contract to extend his stay at the club.

Ramsdale joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in August 2021. At the time, the move raised some eyebrows because of the amount of money the Gunners were investing in a player who had just suffered consecutive relegations from the Premier League.

But the former Bournemouth keeper soon dislodged Bernd Leno as number one at the Emirates Stadium, earning his senior England debut as well within a couple of months of his move to Arsenal.

Now, after being ever-present in their Premier League title challenge – which now looks set to fail – this season, Ramsdale has earned himself a longer stay at Arsenal.

Since October, it has been clear that a new deal has been in the pipeline for the 25-year-old. Now, it has been finalised.

Although not confirmed in the club’s announcement, Ramsdale’s new contract will reportedly last until 2028, by which time he will be 30 years old.

Speaking on the club’s official website, manager Mikel Arteta highlighted how well Ramsdale has developed during their time together.

Arteta told www.arsenal.com: “We’re all so happy that Aaron has signed a new contract.

“The way Aaron has developed over the past two years has been exceptional, with his performances, contribution and overall adaptation to the club.

“It’s great that we’re continuing to build our future with our biggest talents in our young squad. We’re all looking forward to enjoying many more years of Aaron the player and the person at the football club.”

Edu reacts to Aaron Ramsdale agreement

For sporting director Edu, keeping Ramsdale represents a continuation of the club building a core of promising young players.

Edu added: “It’s great that we’ve agreed and completed a new contract with Aaron. We have enjoyed so many positive moments from Aaron’s performances in his two years with us, and are looking forward to many more.

“We must also remember that Aaron is still very young, so there is still a lot more to come from him, as we continue to build with our young foundations.”

Ramsdale has made a total of 76 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal up to the time of his contract renewal.
